Chess Masters
More than just a game, Chess Masters helps students develop logic, patience, and strategic thinking in a structured and supportive setting. Students learn opening moves, mid-game tactics, and endgame strategies while gaining confidence and discipline.
Offered since 1997, Chess Masters is ASEP SoCal’s flagship program, impacting nearly 100,000 students over the past two decades. Students are grouped by skill level and guided through lessons on piece movement, tactics, and endgame strategy. The class structure alternates between instruction and guided play, ensuring hands-on engagement and practice. Instructors emphasize decision-making, sportsmanship, and resilience, helping students develop confidence and patience both on and off the board.

STEMbots
In this hands-on robotics program, students work in teams to design, build, and program robots using the VEX IQ system. By problem-solving and experimenting, students learn engineering concepts, coding basics, and teamwork while completing real-world challenges.
Each session presents students with a new engineering challenge. Working in teams of 3-6 students, participants brainstorm, prototype, and refine their robot designs before putting them to the test. The program is heavily focused on collaboration, with instructors guiding students through conflict resolution, effective communication, and leadership skills. STEMbots is best suited for indoor environments and can accommodate up to 600 students at once with advanced planning.

Cube Club
Students master the Rubik’s Cube using an easy-to-learn method that builds spatial awareness, memory retention, and problem-solving skills. Advanced students take on speed-solving challenges and mosaic cube art projects, turning strategy into a creative experience.
Cube Club is designed to turn problem-solving into a creative challenge. Students progress at their own pace, first learning to solve the cube step by step, then competing against personal best times. More advanced students work on mosaic cube art, designing patterns and images using multiple cubes. Every student receives a Rubik’s Cube to keep, encouraging ongoing practice. The class structure includes fun mnemonics, story-based problem-solving, and peer collaboration, making the learning process engaging and rewarding.

Brain Fuel
This engaging STEM program introduces students to physics, engineering, and critical thinking through hands-on experiments, engineering builds, and logic puzzles. Students explore concepts like force, motion, and aerodynamics in a fun and interactive way.
This program follows the research and development model, where students design, test, and refine their creations. Example projects include straw rockets, catapults, floating boats, and mini-bridges. The program encourages students to hypothesize, experiment, and collaborate, making it a perfect introduction to scientific thinking. Brain Fuel’s flexible format makes it accessible for students of all skill levels, with projects modified to be age-appropriate and developmentally engaging.

Comic Creators
Students bring their stories to life by developing original characters, illustrating scenes, and creating their own short comic books. This program strengthens visual storytelling, artistic skills, and creative expression while allowing students to share their work with peers.
Comic Creators provides a structured yet flexible environment where students write and illustrate their own stories, refining them into final comic books. Instructors focus on helping students find their unique voice, with an emphasis on character development, story structure, and panel design. The final session is a showcase event, where students present their completed comics to their peers, celebrating creativity and self-expression. The program requires no prior artistic experience, making it accessible to all students.

ASEP Active
A movement-based program designed to promote health, teamwork, and confidence through a variety of fitness activities, cooperative games, and sports challenges. Students engage in age-appropriate exercises that encourage fun and inclusivity.
This program emphasizes inclusivity and participation, ensuring that all students, regardless of fitness level, can enjoy physical activity. Games and exercises are developmentally appropriate and modified based on group size, student ability, and available space. The activities promote teamwork, coordination, and self-confidence, with an overarching goal of making movement fun and accessible. ASEP Active is best suited for outdoor spaces but can be adapted for indoor environments when necessary.
